They provide a fixed-income analogue to Shari'ah-compliant investment portfolios, giving diversification away from equities and real estate, which make up a large portion of these portfolios now (e.g. compare the asset allocation of a takaful fund with a conventional insurer's fund). <br /><br />I have reposted some of my blog posts on Zawya.
